Restoring turbine cooling system performance with specialist chemical cleaning and high-volume flushing
Advantiv was engaged to improve the performance of a turbine cooling system at a UK Energy Recovery Facility after the build-up of iron oxide and debris had significantly restricted cooling water flow.
The fouling was reducing heat transfer efficiency and impacting the overall performance of the turbine, making a planned cleaning programme essential to restore system efficiency and reliability. Following a detailed site assessment, Advantiv worked with specialist cleaning and water treatment partners to develop a bespoke solution that could be delivered safely, efficiently and with minimal disruption to site operations.
Activity
The project was designed around three key objectives:
- Restore cooling water flow by removing accumulated debris through high-volume circulation and filtration.
- Remove iron oxide deposits using specialist chemical cleaning to improve heat transfer efficiency.
- Recommission the system with fresh coolant and corrosion inhibitor to support long-term performance.
Advantiv coordinated the complete cleaning programme, managing all aspects of the project from planning through to completion. A combination of high-volume flushing, specialist chemical cleaning and continuous filtration was used to remove accumulated deposits from the cooling circuit, while carefully monitoring the cleaning process to ensure optimum results.
Once the system had been thoroughly cleaned, it was flushed, refilled with fresh coolant and treated with corrosion inhibitor to help protect the system and maintain performance over the longer term.
Outcome
The cleaning programme successfully removed significant levels of iron oxide and debris from the cooling system, restoring the performance of the cooling circuit and improving overall operating efficiency.
The project delivered a five-fold increase in cooling water flow, significantly improving heat transfer through the system and reducing the impact of fouling on turbine performance. The combination of specialist cleaning techniques and effective project management enabled the work to be completed safely and efficiently, providing the facility with a cleaner, more reliable cooling system and helping to support the long-term performance of this critical asset.
By coordinating specialist expertise and delivering a tailored engineering solution, Advantiv helped the customer improve system efficiency, reduce operational risk and maximise the reliability of its turbine cooling infrastructure.
